Anne Katharina Schreiber

German Baroque violinist Anne Katharina Schreiber is a longtime member of the Freiburger Barockorchester. She is also a notable educator and has a flourishing solo career with that group, in appearances with other leading European historical performance ensembles, and also in more recent repertory. Schreiber studied in Freiburg with violinist Rainer Kussmaul, an influential teacher of Baroque violin and a longtime faculty member at the Freiburg Hochschule für Musik. Among his other students were violinist and conductor Gottfried von der Goltz and violinist Petra Müllejans, who became music directors of the Freiburg Barockorchester ("Freiburg Baroque Orchestra"). Schreiber became a member of that group in 1988, shortly after it was founded. She remains part of the orchestra as of the mid-2020s and has toured with the group worldwide and made numerous albums with it; an early release that featured Schreiber prominently was 1993's Bach, Vivaldi: Overtures, Sinfonias & Concertos on the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi label. Schreiber has often appeared as a soloist with the orchestra. Schreiber is also a member of Trio Vivente, with pianist Jutta Ernst and cellist Kristin von der Goltz. This group plays a more modern repertory (and instruments), and Schreiber has appeared on several of its recordings, including a 2017 album devoted to the piano trios of 19th century composer Emilie Mayer. She has also played a modern violin on recordings, including a 2020 release featuring Schoenberg's sextet Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4. On Baroque violin, she is in demand as a soloist with various ensembles, including the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, and Collegium Vocale Gent; she is also a member of the latter's associated orchestra. Schreiber has appeared on several albums on Harmonia Mundi, including a 2013 recording of Bach's Concerto for three violins and orchestra, BWV 1064R, and a 2023 album featuring Schumann's Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47, and Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44, the latter with violinist Isabelle Faust, violist Antoine Tamestit, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, and fortepianist Alexander Melnikov. Schreiber is on the faculty at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg.
