Alexander Walker
Conductor Alexander Walker has had a distinguished career, working with both of the major orchestras in London and a wide variety of regional groups. Unusual in an age when the migration of talent has gone mostly the other way, he has also been quite active in Russia and Eastern Europe.
Born in 1973, Walker attended the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe and took to music early, reaching a level on double bass sufficient to join Britain's National Youth Orchestra in 1990 and remain in his chair until 1992. He attended Bristol University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. The Russian aspect of his career began when he traveled to the St. Petersburg Conservatory for courses in conducting with Ilya Musin. His formal debut came in opera, with a production of Mozart's The Magic Flute in the 2000-2001 season. Walker's career developed slowly, but then took sharp leaps forward due to his familiarity with both Western and Eastern repertory and ways. From 1999 to 2004, he was principal guest conductor of the Voronezh State Symphony Orchestra in Russia. In 2004, Walker conducted Glinka's opera A Life for the Tsar at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Over the next several years he conducted Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker three times and Swan Lake once in major London houses. He has also championed English music in Russia and Eastern Europe and has received the Elgar Medal for his work in exposing new audiences to that composer's music.
In Russia, Walker has made ongoing guest appearances with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra and with Yuri Bashmet's New Russia State Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted the Prague Philharmonia at the Rudolfinum in Prague and has made many guest appearances in Scandinavia. In Britain, Walker has emerged as something of a specialist in the symphonies of Havergal Brian, recording them for the Naxos label with both the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, with the latter, he released a recording of Brian's Symphony No. 7 and Symphony No. 16.
Walker has served as music director of several British orchestras for youths and adults, including the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, the Northampton Symphony Orchestra, and the Surrey County Youth Orchestra. He teaches at the Royal Academy of Music and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
