This release was nominated for the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Compendium. It's not exactly a survey of the work of Saariaho, whose mature production extends back to the early 1980s, but it might easily serve listeners new to her work as an introduction. The orchestral pieces here display the main features of her rigorous yet accessible style, with its emphasis on orchestral color in frameworks of slowly evolving sound. Additionally, her characteristic use of electronic instruments to accent traditional orchestral writing is on wonderful display in the six-movement Circle Map, where the electronics present distorted versions of the Persian texts of the poet Rumi that give each movement its title. For an ideal place to start with Saariaho, consider Neiges ("Snows," bringing to mind the old and slightly inaccurate idea of the many words for kinds of snow among the Inuit), offered here in a version for 12 cellos that receives its world premiere. The work is challenging for the players and conductor, rising from extremely quiet touches of the string at the beginning and developing into a palette of sound that's remarkably varied considering the homogeneous ensemble. There's a violin concerto of a sort with precise solo work by Peter Herresthal and an orchestral adaptation of a passage from a Saariaho opera at the beginning. Throughout, the work of conductor Clément Mao - Takacs, leading the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, is ideal; he realizes that performances of Saariaho depends on being aware of new layers in the music as they appear, and his execution is spectacular. He is aided by the work of BIS' engineers, working in the Oslo Concert Hall. This is one of Europe's underrated sonic spaces, and here it is put in the service of a musical experience that is almost tactile.
