Text in englischer Sprache verfügbar
Heritage's Heavenly Voices consists of historic recordings made in 1959 and 1961 by the Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge, conducted by George Guest. The pieces are typical of mid-20th century Anglican repertory, with a marked emphasis on the music of Thomas Weelkes and Thomas Tallis, though the Ave verum Corpus of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by J.S. Bach are the best-known selections for a general audience. While this choir is reasonably clear in its diction and respectable in its singing -- perhaps considered first-rate for an English choir of its time -- its tone quality has been surpassed by many modern groups that have raised the standards of choral singing to a highly professional level. The recorded sound of the men and boys is decent for tapes of this vintage, though some of the defects of analog recording are apparent in the hiss and the occasional wow and flutter. As a result of its patches of roughness and less than seraphic singing, buyers should be careful about purchasing this CD; it is an artifact from a time where the expectations of choirs and recording technology were somewhat lower than they are today.
