Manchester Camerata
The Manchester Camerata is both a durable chamber ensemble and one that has grown increasingly innovative as it has developed. Rather than pursuing abstract international norms, the members of the Camerata say "We bear the name of Manchester consciously and believe passionately in making music with the community of which we are a vital part."
The Manchester Camerata was founded in 1972 by BBC Radio producer Ralph Gonley, who served for several years as administrator. The group's first principal conductor was Szymon Goldberg (1977-1980). He was followed by Manoug Parikian (1980-1984), Nicholas Braithwaite (1984-1991), Sachio Fujioka (1995-2000), Douglas Boyd (2001-2011), and Gabor Takács-Nagy (2001-). The orchestra's permanent guest conductor is Nicholas Kraemer. The Camerata has evolved into a major chamber orchestra in the north of England, giving concerts in many other cities in addition to Manchester. It has also made annual appearances at the Rasiguères Festival of Music and Wine outside Perpignan, France. The Manchester Camerata maintains a Manchester Camerata String Quartet and other smaller subgroups.
The Camerata has been a leader in performing for people with dementia, mental health problems, and young people in schools. The group has participated in research on the use of music in treating dementia. The Camerata is a registered charity in Britain. Despite these accomplishments, it has faced financial problems; funded by the Arts Council England and the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, it has run up deficits and required periodic stabilization.
The group has recorded mostly for Avie, issuing not only chamber orchestra repertory but also Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 ("Choral"), both in 2011. Both in concert and on recordings the Camerata has attracted world-class soloists. In 2019, the group recorded Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, and Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467, with pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet on the Chandos label.
