John Andrews

Conductor John Andrews has specialized in bel canto opera and vocal music and opera of the English Baroque. He has also held important orchestral conducting positions. Andrews was born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1976 but was raised in Manchester, England. He became interested in orchestral music after a local music program introduced him to the tuba, and he played brass band music in competitions that focused on small details of performance. Andrews attended Cambridge University, earning a PhD in music and history in 2008. He taught in the Cambridge University Music Hub program, aimed at exposing a wider audience to classical music, and he gave lectures at the Elgar School of Music and the Blackheath Conservatoire. Andrews made several recordings for the Dutton Epoch label with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the BBC Singers, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, emphasizing British music of the 18th and 19th centuries. One of these, featuring Arthur Sullivan's incidental music for Shakespeare's Macbeth and The Tempest, was named a disc of the year by the London Sunday Times. Andrews' conducting career has often focused on opera. He has led performances of more than 40 operas in Britain and abroad at such venues as the Grange Festival, the English Touring Opera, and the Volkstheater Rostock in Germany. He is a frequent presence at the English Music Festival, championing neglected English works from the 17th to the 21st centuries. His operatic repertory leans toward the English Baroque and Italian bel canto music. Andrews also conducts orchestral music, and he became the principal guest conductor of Britain's National Symphony Orchestra in 2017. He has also held the position of artist-in-association with the English Symphony Orchestra. Andrews has made several recordings for the Resonus Classics label, beginning with a 2020 recording of Malcolm Arnold's The Dancing Master, Op. 34, with the BBC Concert Orchestra. In 2023, he led the BBC Symphony Orchestra and a cast of top singers in a recording of Ethel Smyth's one-act opera Der Wald.
