Tigercats

East London indie group Tigercats were formed in 2010 by singer/songwriter and guitarist Duncan Barrett along with his brother Giles on bass, Jonny Evans on drums, and Laura Kovic on vocals and keyboards. Influenced by classic U.K. pop acts like Orange Juice, Belle and Sebastian, and Hefner, they issued a pair of singles on small British labels Haircut Records and WeePop before making their album debut with 2012's Isle of Dogs. Their mix of gentle, bittersweet pop and quirky, fuzzed-out indie eventually attracted the attention of noted British label Fortuna, which signed them in 2014. Now working as a quintet with the addition of guitarist Paul Rains from Fortuna labelmates Allo Darlin', they released their sophomore album, Mysteries, in early 2015. Spending time on the road in support of the album, including spots at numerous European festivals, the group returned to their native East London to set about writing and recording their third album. Inspired by the gentrification of their area, the album also saw frontman Duncan Barrett ditching his guitar for an electric kalimba, processed via his pedal board, giving the group a different sound. Drawing on Afrobeat, desert psych, and tropical pop, the resulting Pig City was issued at the beginning of 2018 via El Segell del Primavera, the label set up by the Barcelona-based festival of the same name.
