Nightcrawlers
Scottish-based electronic dance act Nightcrawlers is based around house DJ, producer, and vocalist John Reid. Debuting in the early '90s, Reid scored his first Top Ten hit on the U.S. dance singles chart with the crossover "Push the Feeling On," which became an enduring hit that was reworked numerous times over the decades, most notably by remixer Marc Kinchen and as samples in songs by Rihanna and Pitbull. In 2021, Reid collaborated with English DJ Riton for yet another iteration of the hit, producing "Friday" featuring Mufasa and Hypeman. "Friday" became a smash across Europe, the U.S., and Australia. In addition to his own music, Reid is also a songwriter and has penned tracks for the likes of Westlife, Rod Stewart, and Tina Turner.
Born September 6, 1963 in Glasgow, Reid formed Nightcrawlers after years on the DJ circuit, hoping to take his soul and funk inspirations into the pop realm. The act released the single "Living Inside a Dream" in 1992, but failed to gain any commercial success, and it wasn't until "Push the Feeling On" that Reid achieved a Top Ten hit on the U.S. dance singles chart. The track was re-formed by Marc Kinchen with his "Dub of Doom" remix, which reached number 22 on the U.K. singles chart in 1994. For the four following singles, Reid worked very closely with Kinchen, and all the singles featured Kinchen remixes: "Surrender Your Love" (U.K. number seven), "Don't Let the Feeling Go" (U.K. number 13), "Let's Push It" (U.K number 23), and "Should I Ever (Fall in Love)" (U.K number 34). These tracks all wound up on Reid's debut full-length, 1995's Let's Push It. It was a few years before "Never Knew Love" was released in 1999, but it failed to enter the charts. "Push the Feeling On" was again remixed and re-released, this time by RCA and Rosabot, and went into the U.S. dance charts at number one. The song's persisting appeal also crossed into the mainstream, finding its way onto a Bob Sinclair remix of Rihanna's 2008 hit "Don't Stop the Music" and on Pitbull's 2009 single "Hotel Room Service."
The next single, "Cryin' Over You," was released in 2011, featuring vocalist Taio Cruz. The following year, yet another "Push the Feeling" makeover -- this time with Glamrock Brothers and Sunloverz -- landed on the German and Swiss charts. Reid closed the decade with The Nightcrawlers Soul Sessions EP, which featured guests Big Narstie and Russell Small.
In 2021, British electronic producer Riton sampled "Push the Feeling On" for his single "Friday." Joined by vocalists Mufasa and Hypeman, the track was a viral success on social media and soared to the upper reaches of the global charts.
