Nems
Gruff Brooklynite Nems (aka Gorilla Nems) is a veteran battle rapper who takes a similarly antagonistic approach when he's in the vocal booth. Active since the early 2000s, he made a name for himself competing locally before going national on MTV2's Fight Klub series. His "Bing bong!" catch phrase went viral in 2021, and he has also expanded his audience with the humorous off-the-cuff insults he has hurled at passers-by in his web series Don't Ever Disrespect Me. Also a prolific recording artist, Nems has released dozens of solo and duo projects that include Fuck Your Lyfe: Valium Won (2005), Gorilla Monsoon (2019), Congo (featuring "Bing Bong," 2021), and the Scram Jones collaboration Rise of the Silverback (2023).
Born Travis Doyle, Nems is from Brooklyn's Coney Island neighborhood. During high school, he moved to Staten Island, and for a while lived with his grandparents in the Pocono Mountains, where he started writing rhymes. Back in New York, he gained a reputation for his battle skills, leading to repeated success on MTV2's Fight Klub. Through Brooklyn's Creative Juices label, Nems started building his discography with mixtapes, debuting in 2005 with Fuck Your Lyfe: Valium Won, and continuing the rest of the decade with titles like Fuck Ya Laws: Valium 2 and Super Marvelous. Nems had a handful of additional mixtapes to his credit by the time he landed a featured role on Ghostface Killah's "Homicide," his first of several collaborations with the Wu-Tang member. Just before the end of the 2010s, Nems teamed with producer Jazzsoon for Gorilla Monsoon, a set featuring Conway the Machine on the highlight "Where You Know Me From."
Nems turned another in his third decade of activity, linking with Ill Bill for a self-titled 2020 release under the name Gorilla Twins, and in 2021 his exclamation of "Bing bong!" took on a life of its own through social media. He responded to the virality with the track of the same title, featured on the characteristically hard-hitting Congo. Numerous versions of the track -- featuring Busta Rhymes, Styles P, and Paul Wall, among others -- were out by the end of the following March. In 2023, Nems and Scram Jones partnered for Rise of the Silverback. By then, Nems' web series had taken off, and the track of the same name, "Don't Ever Disrespect Me" featuring Ghostface Killah, was among the highlights of the collaborative LP.
