Lorenzo Bavaj
Appreciated for his innate musicianship and astonishing technique, Lorenzo Bavaj is internationally noted as a concert pianist and accompanist to famous vocalists. Encouraged by his father, a pediatrician and violinist, Bavaj began to play the piano when he was eight years old. After receiving his basic education in his hometown, Bavaj entered the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro. He graduated summa cum laude and then went on to study with Stanislav Neuhaus at the Vienna Conservatory and the noted Shostakovich interpreter Tatiana Nikolayeva at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. At the University of Bologna, Bavaj studied musicology and simultaneously studied organ, composition, harpsichord, and conducting at the Pesaro Conservatory and graduated in 1980. After winning several prestigious piano competitions, he began his career as a concert pianist touring Italy, Scotland, England, Poland, Bulgaria, Spain, Yugoslavia, Malta, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the former Soviet Union. His extraordinary skills at providing accompaniment to vocalists led him to collaborate on over 800 concerts and recitals with such international artists as Maxence Larrieu, Peter-Lukas Graf, Fiorenza Cossotto, Cecilia Gasdia, Montserrat Caballé, Leo Nucci, and José Carreras, with whom he has been continuously associated since 1989. Recently, Bavaj has collaborated with pianists Felice Venanzoni and Guido Galterio in the revival of fascinating nineteenth century works for piano six-hands and piano four-hands, including works by Verdi, Panzini, Donizetti, and Rossini. The trio has given enthusiastically received concerts in Italy, Spain, Germany, and Japan. Bavaj directed several Italian music companies, including L'Incontro Musicale, Orchestra Camera di Pesaro, and the Macerata Opera. He also gives master classes in piano, chamber music, and the piano accompaniment of classical singers. Bavaj was honored by being elected to the Accademia dei Catenati in Macerata, which brings together people who are especially distinguished in the arts.
