John Marshall
b. 28 August 1941, Isleworth, Middlesex, England. John Marshall was one of the most impressive drummers Britain produced, equally powerful, flexible, and reliable in rock, jazz, or fusion. He played at school, but became more heavily involved with music while studying psychology at university. He studied drums privately with Allan Ganley and Philly Joe Jones, and worked with Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated (1964), Graham Collier (1965-1970), Nucleus (of which he was a founder member with Ian Carr in 1969, and to which he returned in 1982), Mike Gibbs, Jack Bruce (1971-1972), and, in February 1972, he began his long-term membership of Soft Machine. On leaving the band, he joined Eberhard Weber's Colours (1977-1981). He was a regular associate of John Surman over many years, and also worked with Michael Garrick, Keith Tippett, Chris McGregor, John McLaughlin, John Taylor, Graham Bond, Mike Westbrook, Tubby Hayes, Jaspar Van’t Hof, Kenny Wheeler, Gil Evans, Alan Skidmore, Ronnie Scott, Arild Andersen, and many others, including those in the contemporary classical field and in session work. John Marshall died on September 16, 2023, at the age of 82.
