Jan Dusek
Jan Dušek has had dual careers as a pianist and a composer. He is also a significant educator.
Dušek was born on April 11, 1985, in Ústí nad Orlicí, near Pardubice in what was then Czechoslovakia. He pursued studies in both piano and composition from the start, taking courses in both fields at the Conservatory of Teplice from 1999 to 2005. In composition, his principal teacher was Barbara Bůžková; in composition Václav Bůžek. Dušek went on to the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he studied composition with Hanus Barton and completed a doctoral degree in 2012. Soon afterward, he joined the school's composition faculty. Dušek continued his piano studies as well, taking master classes with the likes of Cyprien Katsaris, Angela Hewitt, and Maria João Pires and more extended lessons with Robert Lehrbaumer, Xiao-Mei Zhu, and Gordon Fergus-Thompson. He won prizes in both keyboard and composition, including second prize in the interpretation of melodrama at the Zdeněk Fibich International Competition (with actor Radek Valenta) and an audience prize at the NuBERG 2011 Competition for his music to the silent film The Child of the Ghetto.
Dušek's compositions have been heard in the programs of orchestral and chamber ensembles, including the Prague Philharmonia and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, as well as at the International Festival of Concert Melodrama; they have been played by leading Czech soloists, including clarinetist Irvin Venyš and percussionist Markéta Mazourová. He has also continued to perform as a pianist, and in 2015, he made his recording debut in that capacity, backing soprano Irena Troupova-Wilde on the album Viktor Ullmann: Schwer ist's, das schöne zu lassen on the ArcoDiva label. In 2021, Dušek established the Lieder Company, which aimed to promote song recitals and song repertory. He returned in 2023, performing in a chamber group that recorded works by David Post on the Bridge label.
