Greg Champion

Australian singer-songwriter Greg Champion was discovered in an Adelaide folk club in the 70s and formed the bands Tidewater and The Fabulaires before embarking on a solo career. Born in Benalla, Victoria, but raised in Hectorville, a suburb of Adelaide, he rose to fame as a member of the radio comedy troupe the Coodabeen Champions in 1983, writing songs about Australian football and cricket. This theme was also present on his studio debut Work Hard Play Hard (1985), as well as in Greg Champion (1990), Champs (1992), and That's What I Like About Football (1994). In 1995, he teamed up with country artist Colin Buchanan for the Christmas album Aussie Christmas with Bucko & Champs, which featured the holiday classic “Aussie Jingle Bells” and peaked at Number 39 on the ARIA charts. The album was certified gold in Australia and became his highest-selling release, spawning a sequel in 1998 that achieved platinum sales. Further success ensued in the subsequent years with albums like Shack Tapes (2006), whose lead single “Been There, Done That” hit Number 4 on the country charts, Strayana (2009), Emergence (2012), and Happy Travels (2017).
