Francesca Leonardi

The first Italian pianist signed to the Deutsche Grammophon label, Francesca Leonardi has appeared internationally as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber player. She is also active as an educator. Leonardi was born in Milan in 1984. She took up the piano at age three and was given lessons by Graziella Bianchi and Paolo Bordoni. At 16, she made her debut as a soloist performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 13 in C major, K. 415, with the Rosetum Orchestra. Entering the Conservatorio di Milano, she graduated in 2004 with top grades and honors. Leonardi went on for further study at the Accademia Musicale Pescarese, at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, and finally at the Royal College of Music in London, where she studied with collaborative piano Nigel Clayton and Roger Vignoles. Her playing was heard on the soundtrack of the 2008 film The Beautiful Truth. She received both a master's degree in piano performance and an Artist Diploma in piano accompaniment with distinction in 2012. In London, her studies were supported by the Gordon Calway Stone Memorial Award. Leonardi has appeared widely as a soloist around Italy and beyond. She has toured Japan, China, the U.S. (where she performed at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's summer home of Ravinia), and South America, where among other appearances, she was heard at the opening ceremony of the Football World Cup in 2014. That year, she made her debut on Deutsche Grammophon, backing violinist Francesca Dego on the first volume of what became a complete cycle of Beethoven's violin sonatas. The pair also released the album Suite Italienne on Deutsche Grammophon in 2018. Leonardi has also appeared in chamber music with a wide range of other musicians, including violist Bruno Giuranna, violinist Laura Marzadori, and violinist Sonig Tchakerian. With Laura Bortolotto and Amedeo Cicchese, she has performed Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Op. 56. Leonardi and Dego moved to the Chandos label for a pair of recordings of Mozart's violin concertos and violin sonatas, released in 2021 and 2022.
