Edward Rushton
Edward Rushton is a British pianist and composer known for his work as an accompanist for Simon Wallfisch, Juliane Banse, and many others. He is also a dedicated educator and teaches piano accompaniment and song design at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. He was born in Norwich in 1972 and began his music education at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. This was followed by studies with Robin Holloway at King’s College, Cambridge, and with James Macmillan at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He relocated to Switzerland in 1998, began teaching piano accompaniment at the Musikhochschule Luzern in 2000, and in 2001 he completed Irwin Gage’s lied interpretation masterclass at the Zurich University of Applied Arts. Several of Rushton’s compositions received premieres in the 2000s, including Emissions, Palace, and the operas Harley and Im Schatten des Maulbeerbaums. He also began a successful career as a recording artist with the release of Romantic Swiss Song: Freund; Schoeck; Kletzki in 2002, and Edvard Grieg: Summer Night in 2006. In 2007, his opera The Shops was recorded on the NMC label, and Rushton appeared on the album Walter Courvoisier: Lieder und Klavierwerke with Robin Adams and Jeannine Hirzel. In the 2010s, he recorded several albums of vocal and chamber music, and he composed over 40 works in several genres, including three operas and a Symphony. He received the City of Zurich’s Werkjahr stipend in 2013, and the Conrad Ferdinand Meyer Foundation Prize in 2020. More 2010s recordings include Der letzte Gruß - Lieder by Hermann Levi, Brahms, Schumann, von Herzogenberg & Duparc with René Perler, Songs of Max Kowalski with Camille Butcher and Simon Wallfisch, and Mon amie la lune: Lieder by Grieg, Debussy, Kirchner, Maurice with Kathrin Hottiger. Rushton resides in Switzerland and remains very active in his multifaceted career.
