Alexander Dmitriev
Conductor Alexander Dmitriev was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russia on January 19, 1935. His repertoire consists of orchestral and choral music as well as opera. He is known for combining new and contemporary works with classics by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Schubert, Mozart, Sibelius, Mahler, Verdi, and others. The son of a member of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, he began his musical education at the Glinka Choral Academy and graduated in 1953. He also studied conducting and music theory at the Leningrad State Conservatory, where he won first prize at the Leningrad Festival before graduating in 1958. Between 1961 and 1971, he conducted the Karelian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. His next position was as conductor of the Leningrad Small Opera and Ballet Theatre between 1971 and 1977. He then became chief conductor of the St. Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra in 1977, a position he has maintained for over 45 years. He is also a professor at the St Petersburg Conservatory and leads the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in Norway. During his career, he has been honored with many awards including People's Artist of the USSR (1990), the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2005) and the Order of Honor (2005). His acclaimed recordings include Tchaikovsky. Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36 - Hamlet. Overture-fantasia in F Minor, Op. 67 (1979), Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 (1991), Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2 & The Rock (1994), Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 & Capriccio Italien (1995), Handel: Messias (2009), Tchaikovsky. Suite No.2 in C Major Op. 53 (2012), and Mendelsshon: Concerti... (2012).
