Al James

Al James became a modern-day leader of the Filipino hip-hop community during the early 2020s, when the popular single "PSG" reached Number 7 on Billboard's Philippines Songs chart. He was born in the Philippines as "Alvin James P. Manlutac" on August 19, 1991, and spent much of his childhood in San Juan. He began attending hip-hop shows and also developed an interest in graffiti. James expanded those artistic interests further while attending the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, where he studied fine arts and design. While still a student, he formed the R&B group Fifth Wave Theory with several classmates and began uploading his music to the internet. James also became involved with Baryo Berde, a collective of hip-hop artists who helped rally attention around rap music throughout the Philippines. James began performing a song of his own, "Pahinga," during Baryo Berde's live performances, and the track became a viral hit after he released it on Soundcloud in late 2016. Another single, "Ngayong Gabi," followed in 2017 and became a hit on local radio stations in Mandaluyong. James released "Pa-Umaga" in 2018, "Latina" in 2019, and "Repeat" in 2020, designing the majority of the songs' cover art himself. Although embraced by the Filipino mainstream, he didn't released a charting hit until 2022, when "PSG" reached Number 7 in the Philippines. This success helped renew interest in his older material, with "Pa-umaga" subsequently reaching the Top 50 of the Philippines' Top 50 Spotify chart in early 2023.
