Alexis Baro

Alexis Baro is a Cuban-Canadian trumpet player and composer. Born into a musical family in Havana, Cuba, he was drawn to the trumpet at the tender age of 8. His passion and talent led him to the prestigious Amadeo Roldán Music Conservatory in Havana, where he not only honed his skills but also earned a teaching certification. During this time, he cut his teeth playing with Buena Vista Social Club star Omara Portuondo and leading the trumpet section for the National Radio and Television Orchestra at just 19. After moving to Toronto, Canada, in 2001, he was discovered by famed Canadian jazz drummer Archie Alleyne and later joined the hard-bop band Kollage. During his eight-year tenure with Kollage, he received three nominations for "Best Jazz Trumpeter” by the Canadian National Jazz Awards. Havana Banana, his solo studio debut, arrived in 2004 and was followed by an appearance in Hilario Durán's Grammy-nominated album, From the Heart two years later. Over the next few years, he continued his musical exploration on critically acclaimed releases such as Blue Skin (2013), Guilty Pleasure (2015), Sugar Rush (2016), and Sandstorm (2018), which was nominated for Jazz Album of the Year, Solo at the Juno Awards. A tribute to the longstanding Cuban trumpet legacy, the LP Mi Raíz came out in 2022.
