Thanks to the hard work carried out in cooperation with recording studios as well as an increasing number of music labels (Plus Loin Music, Bee Jazz, Ambronay Editions, Zig Zag Territoires, ECM, Mirare, Aeolus, Ondine, Winter & Winter, Laborie, etc.), Qobuz now offers a rapidly-growing selection of new releases and back catalogue records in 24-bit HD quality. These albums reproduce exactly the sound from the studio recording, and offer a more comfortable listening experience that exceeds the sound quality of a CD (typically \"reduced\" for mastering at 44.1kHz/16-bit). \"Qobuz HD\" files are DRM-free and are 100% compatible with both Mac and PC. Moving away from the MP3-focused approach that has evolved over recent years at the expense of sound quality, Qobuz provides the sound calibre expected by all music lovers, allowing them to enjoy both the convenience and quality of online music.

Opmerking 24-bit HD albums sold by Qobuz are created by our labels directly. They are not re-encoded using SACD and we guarantee their direct source. In order to continue on this path, we prohibit any tampering with the product.

The “symphonic” term in this album’s title is to be taken with a grain of salt: Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms (1930) relies on a vast wind section, with only a few cellos and double basses, harp and piano, and no violins nor violas; Schoenberg’s Friede auf Erden (Peace on Earth, 1907) is here given in hits original version for choir a cappella; Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (1965) only require three trumpets and three trombones in addition to the strings and a rather Broadwayian percussions arsenal. Only the (rare and magnificent) Psalm 23 by Zemlinsky, composed in 1910, uses an almost “normal” orchestra for its time. The album’s symphonic honour is safe! It’s worth noting that Schoenberg’s specular and emotional Friede auf Erden is his last great reasonably tonal work, a masterpiece with a tendency for atonality – although a reasoned atonality, never sought for its own sake – that possesses a considerable expressionistic hue. The BBC Symphony Orchestra accompanies with great delight the phenomenal Tenebrae Choir under the lead of conductor Nigel Short. © SM/Qobuz

The works presented here by tenor Benjamin Alunni, with Marine Thoreau La Salle on piano, run from 1914 for Ravel's Two Hebrew Melodies to 1936 and take in the melodies of Elsa Barraine, Arthur Honegger and Darius Milhaud – these three works together making for a discographic first – with a little detour to 1993 for Vita e mors by Nicolas Bacri (for solo cello) and to 2009 for Kaddish by Graciane Finzi. Here we find some superb rarities like Manuel Rosenthal's Five Jewish Songs – from a composer who has been sorely neglected, to say that he has written some splendid pieces – their common point being themes taken from Hebrew music, which the composers, be they Jewish or not, have reproduced unaltered. What’s striking about these lyrics is that they are not sung in French, even though all their composers are French: we also hear Aramaic,  Hebrew (with an Ashkenazi lilt) and Yiddish. A unique musical (and often liturgical) world appears here, which underscores the conception of the importance of Jewish culture that predominated in the first third of the 20th Century. Tenor Benhamin Alunni, who won his spurs in the world of baroque music alongside Rousset, Pichon and the Arts Florissants, has lately also been dipping into a more contemporary repertoire, making the best of his limpid and light voice, which lends perfect clarity to his pronunciation. © SM/Qobuz
