Qobuz meets Joe Goddard (also of electro group Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell to mark the release of The 2 Bears' second album, entitled The Night Is Young and curiously labelled: 'Pop-Hip-House'

Two years after the bewitching album Be Strong, which focused on the sounds of Made in Chicago house music, The 2 Bears have released their very surprising second album, The Night Is Young.

At first we weren’t sure whether this project, undertaken by the duo Joe Goddard (also of Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell (aka Raf Daddy, the notable DJ from the Ministry of Sound), was going to be simply a side-project or if it was created for their own personal entertainment. Now, however, we can see clearly that this duo mean serious business. What is even more astonishing is the surprising eclectic content of The Night Is Young.

Although you will naturally find 90s house influences and the dancefloor vibrations that are regularly associated with these two DJs, , the album also contains other musical styles; Reggae, pop, disco, soul... the range is vast. Raf Daddy claims that both The Specials and Fun Boy Three majorly influenced their new record. Even the lyrics of the 2 Bears are not exclusively hedonistic, but are occasionally politically engaged, pondering the questions associated with a midlife crisis…

Finally, in order to expand their musical universe even further, the unrestrained duo recorded two tracks in South Africa using local musicians… Whilst in Paris, the two overly talented producers and equally brilliant songwriters combined all these themes together in their second album.
