The impish songwriter is feeling more melancholy than ever…

The title of Mac DeMarco’s new record is… Another One, and it is difficult to think of a better title for his fourth release. It is in fact a mini-LP containing eight new tracks, courtesy of the ever reliable indie-pop label Captured Tracks. Given the naming of the album, as you might expect, nothing has really changed for the Canadian songwriter; a loose cannon now safely ensconced in his adopted home of Far Rockaway, New York. Yet, as it has always been with DeMarco, he succeeds through the heartfelt simplicity of his writing, which permits his sweet, clear melodies to sally forth with brilliant tenderness. His influences are worn on his sleeve (past acknowledgements include Jonathan Richman, Ween, Beck, Arthur Russell, Shuggie Otis, the Beach Boys, Harry Nilsson, Michael McDonald, and, above all, his idols Steely Dan), and his style is instantly marked (clear guitars, open-hearted lyrics that are idiotic and bittersweet in equal measure). Mac DeMarco ties in well with some of the notable trends of 2015, including its propensity for nostalgia, and its emphasis on the laidback. Another One is a record that mixes summery beach songs with melancholy ballads. The Daddy of DIY, as ever, is busy cobbling together his tracks in his inimitable lo-fi method. DeMarco consolidates his position as an icon of the American indie-mainstream with his latest mini-opus.
