About Playlist
Joni Mitchell has stood as one of music's singular legends for 55 years. But she's never been a lone wolf—instead immersing herself in the company of peers, idols and fans. She famously sang backup, along with James Taylor, on Carole King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" when all three were recording at the same studio in 1971; then she moved across the hall and sang backup for Taylor on his cover of King's "You've Got a Friend." She played soulful piano on "Sing My Songs to Me" from Jackson Browne's 1972 album For Everyman, joined The Band for a few of her own tunes at their Last Waltz concert, and is credited with "vocal descant" on Dan Fogelberg's "Nexus." And Mitchell has been extremely catholic in her selection of guests on her own records: from Willie a Nelson ("Cool Water") to Charles Mingus (Mingus) to Billy Idol and Tom Petty—playing street toughs—for "Dancing Clown." She's also never been afraid to chase a whim: When Don Henley's vocal cameo sounded too similar to Mitchell's own on "Ladies Man," she called on Lionel Richie—recording at the same studio—instead. And then there are her storied Joni Jams, where musicians of all stripes show up at her home to play tribute and hang out. In celebration of the new Joni Mitchell at Newport album, which captures her live collaborations with Brandi Carlile, Marcus Mumford, Lucius, Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, Allison Russell and more at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival, here is a collection of Joni's duets, singalongs and features.
