Writhing Squares

Philly duo the Writhing Squares create a warped reading on spaced-out psych rock using grizzly basslines and minimal drum machine pulses as a foundation for layers of sax, delayed vocals, and other waves of deranged sounds. The band have issued albums on revered indie labels like Siltbreeze and Trouble in Mind, and they often draw comparisons to space rock legends like Hawkwind or the more amped-up fringes of Krautrock. They released several raw early recordings where they took their sound to more adventurous and cosmic places on releases like the 2021 double album Chart for the Solution and their fourth LP, 2024's Mythology. Bassist Daniel Provenzano and sax player/flutist/vocalist Kevin Nickles were both highly active in Philadelphia's experimental rock scene when the Writhing Squares formed around 2013. Eventually, the two began splitting their time between acts like Spacin, Purling Hiss, Ecstatic Vision, and many others while they built their gnarled interpretation of space rock. After a few early cassette and CD-R releases, the band pressed up their first vinyl offering in 2015 with the "Gemini Blues" b/w "Streetlight Nightmare" 7". They were playing out frequently on the East Coast and working on new material. In 2016, the debut full-length In the Void Above arrived on legendary noise rock label Siltbreeze, and the group embarked on a national tour in support of the record. In early 2019, the Writhing Squares returned with their second album, Out of the Ether, issued on Chicago label Trouble in Mind. Their next release, 2021's Chart for the Solution, was their most ambitious project to date. The double album collected recordings made between 2015 and 2020 and included several guest appearances from musicians such as Philadelphia harmonica player Dan Balcer and drummer John Schoemaker, who augmented the programmed rhythms of the album's closing track with live drums. Chart for the Solution was released in March 2021. Schoemaker returned as drummer for the band's fourth album, Mythology. The set was self-recorded, produced, and mixed, with a heavy influence taken from Miles Davis' experimental editing techniques from his '70s material. Mythology was released in April 2024 on Trouble in Mind.
