The Red Pears

Mixing the rich traditions of American indie rock with a dash of influences from their Latino heritage, the Red Pears have forged a notable path through and outside of their native California. Attractive hooks and head-turning album titles, like their 2015 debut We Bring Anything to the Table…Except Tables We Can’t Bring Tables to the Table and its breakout song, “Daylight/Moonlight,” have made the trio darlings of the festival circuit. The Red Pears were formed in El Monte, California -- east of Los Angeles -- by singer/guitarist Henry Vargas and drummer Jose Corona. The name and lineup were a sly wink to the sound and personnel of the White Stripes, although bassist Patrick Juarez soon made the Red Pears a trio; all three were unified by a shared love of indie rock, metal, cumbia, corrido, and even the classic rock acts of the ‘50s and ‘60s that came to El Monte by way of local disc jockey Art Laboe. The trio’s urgent, stripped-down sound was fully formed from the get-go. We Bring Anything to the Table…Except Tables We Can’t Bring Tables to the Table (2015) featured fan favorites “Daylight/Moonlight” and “Hello-Sin-Nation,” each heavy on riff and rhythm with Vargas' vocals front and center. Follow-up For Today, For Tomorrow, For What Is, For What Could’ve Been, released in 2018, expanded their sonic palette beyond garage rock and into surf, reggae, and homegrown ritmos. A year later, the EP Alicia (named for Vargas and Corona’s mothers) offered even more focused guitar-driven melodies. Bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Pears offered even crunchier guitar textures and engaging melodies on You Thought We Left Because the Door Was Open But We Were Waiting Outside (2021) and Better Late Than Never (2024). By this point, the trio’s audience had grown far beyond local clubs and battle of the bands: the trio played the Coachella and opened for Chicano Batman at Los Angeles’ famed Forum in 2024.
