The Pancakes

Carving a niche for herself in the Hong Kong pop scene with her twee English-language lyrics and glittery electropop productions, Dejay Choi founded the one-member band the pancakes in 2000, releasing their debut album Les Bonbons Sont Bons via her own label, Rewind Records, the same year. Having participated in various other musical projects throughout the late 1990s including the bands The Postcard and Tricycle Rider and the solo project Ginger Biscuits, the singer-songwriter, record producer and multi-instrumentalist quickly landed placements in numerous high-profile advertisements for brands including HSBC, San Miguel and the Kowloon Motor Bus Company at the turn of the millennium, many of which featured songs from the album. Signing to Spanish indie pop label Elefant Records the following year for a brief stint before returning to her own label, Choi released a string of albums in the early 2000s while simultaneously venturing into the world of film. After voicing the part of teacher Ms Chan in the 2001 animated film My Life as McDull, she contributed an original song, “gum gum gum”, to the soundtrack for its 2004 sequel, which went on to win the Best Original Film Song award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. After releasing a tenth album, Sometimes When We Cry, in 2013 and turning in a track for the 2015 romance film Triumph in the Skies, the pancakes returned from a lengthy hiatus in October 2020 with their first single in five years, “as brave as that stupid girl”.
