The Hussy

A raucous garage punk band from Wisconsin, the Hussy play short, energetic songs with plenty of energy and not much fuss. For much of their career, the Hussy consisted of just a guitarist and a drummer, and their raw punky sound, informed by hard rock and psychedelia while reinforced with fractured guitar work, was typified by their second album, 2012's Weed Seizure. Looming appeared in 2019 after the group expanded to a trio, and while their essential approach was mostly the same, they did boast a fuller and heavier attack with a second guitar on board. The Hussy were formed in 2008 by guitarist and singer Bobby Hussy (real name Bob Wegner) and drummer Heather Sawyer (who sometimes bills herself as Heather Hussy). Bobby, born in Plymouth, Wisconsin, joined his first band when he was 13, and started recording music two years later. Bobby had moved to Madison and was attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison when he met Heather, who was playing in a group called Cats Not Dogs. Bobby and Heather got to be friends, and when Cats Not Dogs' bassist dropped out of the band in advance of a tour, Bobby volunteered to take his place. In June 2008, Bobby and Heather played their first show as the Hussy, playing out as a duo, and they released their first record, a six-song seven-inch EP, in April 2009. Plenty of live shows followed, while the Hussy appeared on three split singles in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, the band unveiled their first album, Cement Tomb Mind Control, and a year later, their second full-length, Weed Seizure, followed suit. The Hussy were earning a widespread following between their tough but funny songs, no-frills record releases, and a frantic live show that sometimes culminated with Bobby either smashing his guitar or setting it on fire. In 2013, the group brought out their third album, Pagan Hiss. Following the release of Galore in 2015, the Hussy expanded from a duo to a trio when Tyler Fassnacht (aka Baby Tyler), who worked with Bobby in the bands Proud Parents and Fire Heads, joined to play guitar and bass. The expanded edition of the Hussy documented their wild live show with 2018's Live at High Noon Saloon, a vinyl release that came with a DVD of the show in question. 2019's Looming, which found the group taking things just a bit more seriously lyrically, was the Hussy's first studio effort as a trio. However, when they hit the road to support the new product, they'd become even bigger, with Tyler Spatz coming aboard as a bassist, allowing Fassnacht to focus strictly on guitar.
