Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana
L'Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana, or the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra, is a ubiquitous presence on the Italian scene, backing a great variety of operatic and instrumental-music projects. Notably, the group has no permanent conductor, instead making itself available for music led by conductors associated with specific projects.
L'Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana was founded in the late 1980s. It has toured in Belgium and the Netherlands (among other places) under the auspices of the Italian government, maintaining a repertory of popular symphonic works including Ravel's Bolero and Smetana's The Moldau, along with large choral pieces such as the Berlioz Requiem and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. The orchestra has also accompanied ballets, including Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella, and has been featured in musical events broadcast by the RAI and Vatican radio networks. But the group's real strength lies in its impressively large repertory of operas. These numbered at least 80 at the end of the 2010s, and included not only most of the popular Italian works from the late 18th century to the late 19th centuries, but also hitherto unknown or little-known comic operas of the 18th century as well as contemporary pieces such as Il Cavaliere dell'Intelletto by Franco Battiato. In its capacity as an opera orchestra, the group has worked with a large number of conductors from Italy and beyond, and has backed prominent singers including José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, José Cura, Katia Ricciarelli, and many others. L'Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana has also undertaken collaborations with pop musicians including film composer Ennio Morricone, Serj Tankian of the group System of a Down, and Mike Patton, whom they have accompanied on tour. In 2008 the orchestra played a key role in a unique project that formed an ensemble on YouTube from among players of various countries; along with the National RAI Orchestra of Turin, L'Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana was chosen to represent Italy. The group recorded audio-visual orchestral tutorials for distribution on the video surface. The orchestra's varied activities have led to the accumulation of a large catalog of recordings, including symphonic albums on the Unison, Zebralution, Multimedia Classics, and Trumpets of Jericho labels, as well as various operas, including, in 2018, a recording of the short operas The Medium and The Telephone by Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti; it was one of the work's few European recordings.
