Nena Daconte

Named for a character in a Gabriel García Márquez novel, Spain's Nena Daconte is led by singer/songwriter Mai Meneses. Her literate, guitar- and piano-based compositions earned the project chart-topping hits and platinum-selling albums such as 2008's Retales de Carnaval. Over the years, Nena Daconte's sound grew more introspective on 2013's reflective Sólo Muerdo Por Ti and 2019's Suerte..., while 2020's "Hojas Secas" gave an electronic twist to Meneses' music. A participant on the second season of the television competition Operación Triunfo, Meneses wrote and recorded Nena Daconte's first album, He Perdido los Zapatos, in 2005, enlisting Kim Fanlo (whom she met on the show) as arranger/producer. While they were making the album, Nena Daconte signed with Universal Music Spain, which released He Perdido los Zapatos in March 2006. The album's Carlos Jean-produced lead single "Idiota" became a radio hit, and a remix of the track soon followed. The next single, "En Que Estrella Estara," topped the Spanish Billboard Chart. That November, He Perdido los Zapatos was certified gold. In addition, Nena Daconte won the Premio Ondas for Best Spanish Breakout Artist of 2006 and was nominated for MTV's Spanish Act of the Year Award. After touring in support of He Perdido los Zapatos for much of 2007, Meneses returned with Nena Daconte's second album, Retales de Carnaval, in September 2008. It included "Tenia Tanto Que Darte" ("I Had a Lot to Give You"), which was another chart-topper and became the year's best-selling Spanish single. Subsequent singles "El Aleph" and "Ay! Amor" were also Top 20 hits in Spain, and Retales de Carnaval itself was certified platinum in 2009. To make Nena Daconte's next album, Una Mosca en el Cristal, Meneses teamed up with producer Alejo Stivel. The album spawned a pair of Top 40 hits ("No te invité a dormir" and "Perdida"), and Nena Daconte embarked on an acoustic tour across Spain in 2011. The following year, Meneses appeared on the track "Pero Si Tú No Estás," which was used as the theme song of the Spanish TV series La Fuga. Seeking a different direction for her fourth album, Meneses worked with producers Javibu Carretero and Manuel Colmenero. Released in 2012, Sólo Muerdo Por Ti was inspired by the lullabies she sang for her son and boasted a darker sound dominated by guitars. After completing the album's promotional duties, Meneses spent some time living in Dallas with her family. She returned to Nena Daconte in 2018, working with producer Paco Salazar (with whom she collaborated on the 2010 track "I Just Call You Girl") on 2019's Suerte... EP. Meneses reunited with Salazar on October 2020's single "Hojas Secas," which added dance beats and electronic touches to Nena Daconte's style.
