Ming & Ping

Inspired by '80s U.K. acts like New Order and Pet Shop Boys, Ming & Ping, the creation of California musician, artist, producer, and brand designer Bao Vo, offers bright, melodic alternative dance music that encompasses both tinnier, chiptune-like timbres and darker post-punk sounds. After emerging in the early 2000s behind the façade of fictional identical twin brothers, the project became one of the first music acts to promote itself with mobile apps upon the release of 2009's Ming & Ping Pong, a version of the game Pong featuring Vo's own music and visuals. Meanwhile, Ming & Ping grew a following as the twins' songs and instrumentals were increasingly licensed for use in ads and in sports films, particularly surrounding the sport of snowboarding. In decade to follow, Ming & Ping released the double EP The Light of Day/The Darkness of Night in 2014, tracks including a remix of "Heavensent" by another Vo project, BAO, and the EP Los Angeles November 2019, which was inspired by Ridley Scott's classic film, Blade Runner. The 2020s brought releases including 2022's innerspace EP. Formed in San Francisco by the Vietnam-born, California-raised Vo in 2002, Ming & Ping's origins remained unknown as they released their full-length debut, mingping.com, on Monotone and Omega Point Records in 2004. (Fueled by the rarity of public appearances, rumors that the twins were in fact the same performer persisted.) MP2 followed a year later, with a neon-colored illustration of the duo -- or, more precisely, the front half of one and back half of the other -- as cover art. The project's first in a series of releases on the Bao Vo Creative label, 2006's Live, Vol. 1 captured a show in San Francisco earlier in the year. Around this time, Vo graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. By then based in Los Angeles, the project became increasingly popular in the snowboarding world, where its music was used in advertising as well as documentary films. Ming & Ping tracks also appeared on television and in films highlighting other sports. The 2007 LP Causeway Army was widely covered in the indie blogosphere and was followed with a fourth album, simply called Ming & Ping, in August 2009. Vo's Cantonese-opera-inspired live performances under the banner "The Ming & Ping Dynasty" were eventually showcased on tours with Freezepop, West Indian Girl, and Major Lazer. Still self-releasing music on Bao Vo Creative, Ming & Ping issued The Darkness of Night EP in 2012, before reissuing it as part of the EP couplet The Light of Day/The Darkness of Night in 2014. A remix of pop-funk solo project BAO's "Heavensent" appeared in 2017, and two years later, Ming & Ping released Los Angeles November 2019, an EP inspired the 1982 film Blade Runner. Los Angeles November 2019 (Instrumental Version) followed in 2020. The project returned with four new instrumental tracks in the form of the innerspace EP in March 2022.
