Marie-Catherine Girod
Pianist Marie Catherine Girod performs a wide range of standard repertory but specializes in French music, often turning to contemporary and rare works. She is also a longtime educator.
Girod was born in Peyrehorade in far southwestern France on August 19, 1949. Many sources, including some of her own album graphics, use a hyphen between "Marie" and "Catherine." After taking piano courses at the Conservatoire de musique de Bordeaux, she moved on to the Conservatoire de Paris, studying with Jules Gentil. Master classes with Paul Badura-Skoda and Gyorgy Sebok rounded out her education. As a performer, Girod has been especially visible at festivals around France and beyond, including the Richmond Music Festival in the U.S. She plays both chamber music and concertos, notably with the Orchestre symphonique de Bretagne, with which she has also recorded. Girod plays a wide variety of music, often performing French music of the 20th century from Ravel to Dutilleux. She has performed rarities and contributed to the rediscovery of their composers, including Gabriel Dupont, Maurice Emmanuel, and Gustave Samazeuilh. She is often heard on Radio France and participates in concerts organized by that network.
Girod has recorded some 20 albums, dating back to a 1981 album of piano sonatas by Auric, Jolivet, and Dutilleux that won the Grand prix de l’Académie nationale du disque français. Her recordings have appeared on Accord, Timpani, Koch Schwann, and other labels. In 2014, she was signed to Mirare and has issued albums devoted to Dupont and Samazeuilh, and, in 2021, the recital Regards de femmes. Girod has a long career as an educator. From 1986 to 2012, she was the director of the Conservatoire de Sucy-en-Brie, where she organized a national French piano competition. In 2011, she joined the faculty of the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. Among her many honors is that of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, bestowed in 1991.
