MAMAK KHADEM

b. c. 1958, Tehran, Iran. Trained in radif, a classical music genre of her native Iran, Khadem performed with the Iranian National Radio And Television Children’s Choir. Moving to the USA in 1976 she studied at Ali Akbar Khan College of Music and with Nevenka. In Los Angeles in 1992, she joined Axiom Of Choice as lead singer, appearing in concert and on record, the latter including 1996’s Beyond Denial, 2000’s Niya Yesh and 2002’s Unfolding. With this group and as a solo singer, Khadem has been heard at many venues in the USA and Europe. Aside from concert appearances and recordings, she has sung on the soundtrack of several films and television shows, and for stage productions. Khadem continued to study in Iran, in particular with Parisa, Sima Bina, Saleh-Azeimi and Hossein Alizadeh. Artists with whom she has performed and sometimes recorded include Reza Abaee, Simone Haggiag, Rubik Haroutunian, Eyvind Kang, Sofia Lambropoulou, Kourosh Moradi, Hamid Saeidi, Jamshied Sharifi, Skuli Sverrisson, Tulku and Benjamin Wittman. Drawing her inspiration from many cultures, especially traditional Persian poetry that she sets to ancient folk melodies, Khadem has built a repertoire of love songs with worldwide appeal.
