Lill-Babs
Born Barbro Margareta Svensson on March 9, 1938, in Järvsö, Sweden, the singer known as Lill-Babs was a venerated figure in the Scandinavian music scene. Her career, spanning over six decades, was characterized by a persistent dedication to the Schlager genre, a form of popular music in Europe. Lill-Babs entered the music scene in 1954 when she was discovered by Simon Brehm, a jazz musician and producer, while performing in a local hotel. He signed her to his label, securing her initial breakthrough. After making her official debut with the singles "Min mammas boogie" and "Svar till 'Ung och kär'" in 1954, she found her footing in the worlf of Swedish pop music with the release of her 1958 single, "Är du kär i mig ännu, Klas-Göran?" The song, written by Stikkan Anderson, propelled her to national stardom. During this time, she also made her acting debut in the 1958 play Fly mig en greve and appeared in the films Svenska Floyd and En nolla för mycket. In 1961, Lill-Babs represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest with the track "April, april," finishing up in fourteenth place. Splorr, her studio debut, was released in 1962. Over the following years, the Swedish pop star met The Beatles on the Sveriges Television teen music show Drop-In and acted in several films in West Germany. In 1971, she scored another hit single with the song "Welcome to the World," written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA. Even though she became less prolific over the years, Lill-Babs remained active in the music industry well into her later years, releasing popular albums such as Barbro (1984), Who's Sorry Now (1998), and Här är jag (2005). Lill-Babs passed away on April 3, 2018. In 2023, a remix of her song "Letkis-Jenka" by producer J.O.X. entered the Swedish Top 100 at Number 62.
