Like A Storm
Canada-based New Zealand hard rockers Like a Storm found success among U.S. audiences in 2009 thanks to their powerful mix of post-grunge, alt-metal, and classic hard rock with the distinctive addition of the didgeridoo. While their initial success came as an independent act, they later signed with prominent international metal label Century Media, and landed a chart hit with 2014's "Love the Way You Hate Me."
Like a Storm formed in Auckland in 2005 around talented siblings Chris (lead vocals, guitar, keys, didgeridoo), Matt (lead guitar, vocals, keys, programming), and Kent Brooks (bass, vocals, keys, programming), and their friend Zach Wood (drums). Employing a bottom-heavy hard rock sound, their style invoked names like Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, and Drowning Pool, though their use of the throbbing drones of the tribal didgeridoo added a signature Kiwi touch. The group relocated to North America shortly after forming, eventually ending up in Vancouver. They first gained prominence overseas in 2009 while opening for Creed on the group's Full Circle reunion tour; they released their debut long-player The End of the Beginning the same year. In 2011 the band issued an acoustic collection of some of their more popular songs, Like a Storm Unplugged, before unleashing the Chaos Theory, Pt. 1 EP in 2014, which featured the hit single "Love the Way You Hate Me," as well as a hard-hitting cover of Coolio's "Gangster Paradise." The band's second studio long-player, Awaken the Fire, was released the following year via Century Media, followed by lengthy tours of Europe and North America. Returning in the summer of 2018, Like a Storm delivered their third album, the slightly more polished Catacombs.
