Icarus Witch
Purveyors of dark melodic heavy metal, Pittsburgh's Icarus Witch combines the twin leads and galloping rhythms of traditional 80's metal with lyrics rooted in the occult, witchcraft, and paganism. Debuting in 2005 with Capture the Magic, the band has continued to refine their classic metal, AOR, goth, and modern heavy rock sound on acclaimed efforts like Draw Down the Moon (2010), Goodbye Cruel World (2018), and No Devil Lived On (2024).
Founded in 2003 by Jason "Sin" Myers (bass), Icarus Witch drew inspiration from American metal bands from the early '80s such as Queensrÿche, Dio, and Cirith Ungol when recording their first EP, the four-song Roses on White Lace. After honing their chops with a number of tribute album contributions and signing with Cleopatra Records metal imprint Magica, Icarus Witch delivered their full-length debut album, Capture the Magic, in 2005. Songs for the Lost (2007) and Draw Down the Moon (2010) continued to fly the NWOTHM (new wave of traditional heavy metal) banner, while 2012's Rise saw the group moving toward a more modern metal style. Icarus Witch satisfied both sonic persuasions on 2018's Goodbye Cruel World and 2023's No Devil Lived On, both of which married the melodic AOR might and pagan messaging of their earlier releases to the muscular punch of contemporary production.
