Hellsongs

Hellsongs is a Swedish “lounge metal” band known for wry indie pop covers of heavy metal classics. Formed in 2004, they gained a cult following with albums like Hymns in the Key of 666 (2008) and Minor Misdemeanors (2010). After a hiatus, they returned in 2023 with new music on the album Return of the Hellsingers in 2024.Harriet Ohlsson, Johan Bringhed, and Kalle Karlsson formed the group in the fall of 2004 and played their first show at a barn in rural Sweden. The group had recorded three demo tracks by the time 2005 rolled around; the songs were picked up by Sveriges Riksradio's P3 (a Swedish national radio station similar to BBC 1 and CBC 3) for rotation on the heavy metal show Rundgång. Hellsongs released their debut EP, Lounge, the following year. A full-length album, Hymns in the Key of 666, followed in 2008. Ohlsson left the fold in 2009 and was replaced by Siri Bergnéhr, who made her studio debut on 2010's Minor Misdemeanors. After touring in support of the LP, the band ceased operations, performing an electrifying set with the Gothenburg Symphonic Orchestra as their final performance and releasing it in 2012 as Long Live Lounge. Karlsson put together a new lineup the following year, adding vocalist My Engström-Renman and pianist Matti Ollikainen to the crew and releasing These Are Evil Times, which consisted of five covers and five originals. After a decade-long hiatus, Hellsongs returned in 2023 with a cover of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name." Comprised of Karlsson, Maria-Teres Olsson, Daniel Olsson, Anna Andersson, and Lina Lönnberg, the newly minted quintet issued four more singles in early 2024, with all five cuts appearing on Return of the Hellsingers later that October.
