Dro Kenji

South Carolina rapper Dro Kenji weaves together the immediacy of Internet-bred rap with the atmospheric intensity of music he listened to while growing up like Radiohead and XXXTentacion. Kenji was still in high school when he began releasing his original songs online, and he soon was taken under the wing of the collective of producers and artists known as Internet Money, who helped him realize his debut studio album, 2021's Eat Your Heart Out. Other releases, like 2022's With or Without You, followed. Kenji grew up in the sleepy town of Summerville, South Carolina. He began making music when he was in high school, influenced as much by the old-school hip-hop and R&B his parents played for him while he was growing up as by the soundtracks to the video games he spent the majority of his time playing. He began writing and recording his own material and sharing the songs online. His earliest tracks appeared as early as 2017, as lo-fi and somewhat ambient home productions. His work developed quickly, and by 2020, he issued the mixtape Tears and Pistols, moving from his rough-around-the-edges beginnings into a more polished, emo-rap style. Mixtape Race Me to Hell was released the same year, and by that point, Kenji had attracted the attention of L.A. production collective Internet Money. With the guidance of the production team, Kenji began making new songs for release on the 10K Projects label. The first of these tracks arrived on his 2021 debut studio album, Eat Your Heart Out. F*ck Your Feelings followed, and another full-length, With or Without You, appeared in 2022.
