Brown Spirits

Australian group Brown Spirits play a raw, energetic form of instrumental psychedelia heavily influenced by Krautrock, prog, jazz fusion, and deep funk. Their music features a strong yet flowing rhythm section, analog synths, and lead guitar laced with wah-wah effects, all recorded at home to 1/4-inch tape. The band released a trilogy of albums before signing with Soul Jazz Records, which issued Solitary Transmissions in 2023. Drummer Agostino Soldati and multi-instrumentalist Tim Wold, both previously of garage rock band Russian Roulettes (and several other groups), formed Brown Spirits in Coburg, Victoria, a suburb of Melbourne. Wold played guitars, bass, organ, synth, and tape effects on their first album, which was mastered by Mikey Young and released in 2017 by Germany's Clostridium Records (vinyl) and Melbourne's Off the Hip Records (CD). Wold additionally played sitar on Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, both issued in 2020. Vol. 3 actually appeared first, on Clostridium, with Vol. 2 released through the band's own Lysergic Library. Longtime live bassist Ash Buscombe began recording with the group following their initial album trilogy. Brown Spirits signed to London's Soul Jazz Records and released two limited-edition 7" singles, "Dead End Exits" and "Space Race," preceding their 2023 full-length Solitary Transmissions.
