Broken Chanter

Under the name Broken Chanter, Glaswegian musician David MacGregor makes sonically eclectic indie rock that is literate and passionate. After the dissolution of his previous band Kid Canaveral, MacGregor launched Broken Chanter as a solo endeavor, releasing his eponymous debut in 2019. He later teamed up with Delgados drummer Paul Savage, who produced his acclaimed 2021 follow-up, Catastrophe Hits. The album was a Top Ten hit in Scotland and earned MacGregor a contract with veteran label Chemikal Underground, which released Broken Chanter's third LP Chorus of Doubt in 2024. For over a decade MacGregor served as the leader and chief songwriter for the beloved Edinburgh alt-pop band Kid Canaveral. Associated with the creative powerhouse Fence Collective, the group released three LPs before calling it quits in 2017. MacGregor quickly began amassing a catalog of solo demos and adopted the name Broken Chanter, a nod to his grandfather whose bagpipe practice chanter he used to try to play when he was young. With drummer Audrey Tait among his collaborators, he began recording the project's self-titled debut in County Donegal, Ireland, later completing it in Glasgow. Broken Chanter was released in September 2019 by indie label Olive Grove Records and centered around MacGregor's dynamic, shapeshifting songwriting. Powerful, passionate, and sonically layered, the album drew critical praise, though its promotional cycle was hampered during the global pandemic in 2020 when MacGregor was unable to tour. He continued to demo new material, occasionally releasing his more experimental, ambient songs online. He then teamed up with producer Paul Savage (the Delgados, the Twilight Sad, Mogwai) to begin recording at his Chem19 Recording Studio in Glasgow. The resulting album, 2021's Catastrophe Hits, had a robust, often rousing feel that moved through anthemic rock songs, hooky alt-pop, and heavily textured tracks occasionally sung in Gaelic. It was a critical and commercial success, earning widespread praise and reaching number seven on the Scottish Albums chart. Between the album's success and MacGregor's association with Savage, Broken Chanter was offered a spot on Chemikal Underground's roster and soon returned to the studio. Once again produced by Savage, 2024's Chorus of Doubt was energetic and uplifting, moving through MacGregor's array of styles with cohesion and confidence.
