Bill Kwan

Vocalist Bill Kwan is known for his tender, nuanced brand of crossover jazz. Following his 2013 standards album debut, Kwan gained wider acclaim for his jazz renditions of modern pop and rock songs, as on 2015's Poison & Wine and 2021's Ordinary Love: The Music of Sade. A California native, Kwan first became interested in jazz while studying medicine at the University of Southern California. Inspired after attending concerts by singers like Mel Tormé, Nancy Wilson, and Ella Fitzgerald, he began singing. He eventually settled in San Francisco, where he set up his own dermatology practice. During his free time, he took jazz and vocal lessons, studying privately with noted performers like Kitty Margolis, Laurie Antonioli, and Wayne Wallace. Gigs followed and in 2010 he made his debut with Pentimento, a standards album featuring his trio. Kwan returned with 2013's More Than This. Produced by Matt Pierson (Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, k.d. Lang), it found him interpreting classic standards alongside more contemporary songs by Radiohead and Bryan Ferry. He solidified his creative partnership with Pierson on 2015's Poison & Wine, an equally adventurous outing featuring songs by Gillian Welch, Björk, Gotye, and more. In 2021, Kwan released his third Pierson-produced effort, Ordinary Love: The Music of Sade, an intimate investigation of the iconic British soul artist's work.
