Amina Claudine Myers
Both a fine instrumentalist and vocalist, Amina Claudine Myers has displayed an individualistic, sparkling approach on organ, piano, and various synthesizers and keyboards whether playing free music or wailing the blues. She began formal music studies at seven, and directed and sang in gospel groups throughout her childhood and through high school. Myers played in jazz and rock groups in Arkansas, then moved to Chicago. She was a public school teacher there. Myers became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and worked with Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons. She commuted between New York and Chicago during the mid-'70s, working with AACM members. Myers moved to Europe in 1980 and remained there several years before returning to New York. She did free sessions with Lester Bowie, Muhal Richard Abrams and Frank Lowe in the late '70s and early '80s, plus gospel with Martha Bass, David Peaston and Fontella Bass in 1980. Myers has recorded as a leader for Sweet Earth, Leo, Minor Music and Black Saint. She has a couple of sessions available on CD.
