Alien Skin

The solo project of Australian musician George Pappas, Alien Skin creates dark, atmospheric synth pop which is melodic yet spacious and exploratory. Previously active as a member of new wave hitmakers Real Life throughout the '90s and 2000s, Pappas set out on his own and released Alien Skin's debut, Don't Open 'til Doomsday, in 2008. The album reached an online audience of electro-pop and darkwave fans throughout the world, and Pappas continued releasing material on a frequent basis, including numerous albums and singles as well as collaborations with vocalist Deity and Steve Kilbey of alternative rock legends the Church. Alien Skin's 13th album, Put Your Lips on My Lips, was released in 2022. A self-taught musician, Pappas started playing guitar as a youth before he discovered electronic music and began making synth pop inspired by Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode during the early 1980s. Eventually he formed a band called Strange Silence and began playing shows around Melbourne. Later on, he joined Real Life (best known for the 1983 smash "Send Me an Angel"), co-writing much of 1997's Happy and 2003's Imperfection in addition to touring in Europe, the United States, and Australia. Pappas became interested in exploring a different direction with his music, and he left Real Life in 2005. After recording his debut album, he decided to name the project after the final song, "Alien Skin." Don't Open 'til Doomsday was issued by A Different Drum (which had previously released Imperfection), and it reached underground synth pop fans through sites like MySpace. Alien Skin's goth-inspired second album, The Unquiet Grave, followed in 2010. In addition to several non-album singles, including "Summer of Love" (featuring Steve Kilbey) and a cover of Kraftwerk's "The Model," Alien Skin released third album Ghost in the Rain in 2012. Volume One, a collection of demos, also appeared online. The Secret Garden was released in 2013, marking Alien Skin's final release with A Different Drum before the label folded. The lush, downtempo Creature with the Human Face appeared in 2014. Pappas additionally recorded Like Strangers Do as part of the trio Plastic Art Noise. Co-vocalist Deity appeared on Alien Skin's albums A Blue Sky at the Edge of the World (2015) and Winter on Mars (2016). European Electronic Cinema, featuring the David Bowie tribute "My Polaroid Friend (Thin White Duke)," also arrived in 2016. The retro-glancing 1980 Redux appeared in 2017, and A Spoonful of Voices, consisting of songs recorded during the sessions for Winter on Mars, surfaced in 2018. After signing with Moscow-based ScentAir Records, Alien Skin released P.O.P. POP in 2019. New Romance: 1984 arrived the following year, consisting of reworked versions of songs Pappas originally wrote and performed during the early '80s. Cold War Pop, inspired by the music of the same era but containing newly written songs, followed in 2021. Pappas unearthed some of his earliest compositions and released them as 1981-1983 Cassette Synthpop. The full-length Put Your Lips on My Lips, taking further inspiration from the same era, appeared in 2022.
