David Morris

Country singer, rapper, and songwriter David Morris already had numerous tracks to his credit when he suddenly found viral success with an update of George Strait's "Carrying Your Love with Me." The West Virginia native's version, "Carrying Your Love," began trending on TikTok in 2022 and was included on his second album, Hometown Heartbreak. Although he grew up in Charleston, Morris initially distanced himself from his Appalachian roots, moving first to New York, then Los Angeles, where he began a career releasing rap music under the moniker D-Why. By the late 2010s, he'd moved to Nashville and begun making music under his given name. Early tracks like "Settle Down" and "Pretty Rider" leaned more toward gritty country-rock, though Morris soon began to merge sparse hip-hop beats and rapped lyrics with rural country themes and melodic choruses. 2019's Small Town Friday Night EP set the table for his 2020 debut album, Red, White & American Blues, and streaming hits like "Who Hurt You" and "Does He Know About Us." His social media presence also continued to grow, and by the time he uploaded a retooled rap version of Strait's 1997 hit, his fan base helped "Carrying Your Love" go viral on TikTok, bringing with it renewed attention to Strait's original. The song led off Morris' second album, 2022's Hometown Heartbreak.
