Composer Edmund Rubbra is best known for his 11 symphonies. Recordings devoted to his songs are sparse, but Rubbra wrote a lot of them, and this little Chandos release makes a good case for them. Taken singly, the songs might seem derivative of Vaughan Williams, Holst, Gerald Finzi, or several other composers. However, they are stronger as a group, and this project does well to offer a large force of three singers and three accompanists (piano, viola, and harp), breaking up the intense sequence of numerous short pieces, most of them between one and two minutes long. Heard this way, Rubbra's songs emerge as ingenious miniatures that distill the mid-century British style down to concise statements or solutions to problems. What recital audience wouldn't be entranced by the unaccompanied The Mystery, from the Two Songs, Op. 4, if it popped up on a program? Or sample the ultra-economical Invocation to Spring, Op. 17, No. 2, as it packs several significant harmonic events into 65 seconds. The titular The Jade Mountain, Op. 116, is a mini song cycle of five pieces based on translations of Chinese texts; the songs seem to match the imagistic quality of the language. Many of the pieces have texts that are philosophical in some way, and some are religious. The modest-sized voice of soprano Lucy Crowe is ideal for this music, and all of the performers are very strong, captured beautifully by Chandos engineers at Potton Hall, Suffolk. A song recital that is nothing less than a revelation.
