On this 2007 reissue, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor is coupled with his Violin Concerto in D major in riveting performances that represent the label's long-standing association with the Berlin Philharmonic. This world-class orchestra provided solid accompaniment, first for Lazar Berman's 1976 rendition of the Piano Concerto, under the direction of Herbert von Karajan, then for Gidon Kremer's 1980 presentation of the Violin Concerto, conducted by Lorin Maazel. These are important recordings in Deutsche Grammophon's catalog for they have been long admired by fans of these musicians, and the performances are well-matched in strength and brilliance. Berman's delivery of the Piano Concerto is passionate and vivid, and Kremer's penetrating, unsentimental take on the Violin Concerto shows off its fine craftsmanship. The exceptional sound is another attraction this package offers.
