The New York Dolls created everything great about the '70s. No, they didn’t create glam rock, out of which they sprang, but they led directly to punk, with their stripped-down, high-energy, chaotic rock ‘n’ roll and no-bullshit attitude.

Essentially the last '60s garage band, they were barely able to play when first unleashed upon Manhattan. And they didn’t care. The New York Dolls made a sensation, essentially declaring themselves stars before playing a note. They looked the part, seemingly wearing every item from the women's department in a thrift store at once, then smearing their faces with all the makeup in their girlfriend’s purses before running onstage. With seasoned drummer Jerry Nolan replacing the dead-by-misadventure Billy Murcia, as well as producer Todd Rundgren cracking the whip in the studio on the self-titled first LP, the Dolls’ loose, trashy amalgam of the Stones, MC5 and '60s girl group sounds gained form, cohesion, and explosiveness. The blitzkrieg post-Chuck Berry lead guitar of Johnny Thunders emerged as the band’s principal sonic signature, alongside Nolan’s Gene Krupa-influenced drumming and singer David Johansen’s street-poetry lyrics. Second guitarist Sylvain Sylvain held it all together with bluesy panache and good humor, and Arthur "Killer" Kane’s simple bass lines kept it down to Earth.

They were irreverent, continually snorting at authority figures and their supposed betters, never once acknowledging their "place." Mid-America found them "weird" when they appeared on rock TV shows of the day like The Midnight Special or Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. Creem Magazine’s readers voted them both The Best New Group Of 1973, and The Worst. But every kid who would start a punk rock band two or three years later found inspiration in crash-and-burn rockers like "Personality Crisis" and "Human Being," as well as the Dolls’ rejection of pompous stadium rock minus any roll, along with the attendant obsession with technique and 30-minute drums solos. Meantime, every glam metal act of the '80s stole their look, if not the music.
