California native Gregory Porter began singing in his local gospel choir at a young age. When dreams of a career in the NFL were disrupted by a shoulder injury while playing lineman at San Diego State, music became his main interest and focus. Porter's meeting with Kamau Kenyatta, would prove to be pivotal—the saxophonist would become his mentor and eventually introduce him to Hubert Laws, an established flautist, who recorded him on the track, "Smile" from his 1998 album, Hubert Laws Remembers The Unforgettable Nat "King" Cole.
Porter has since released six studio albums, beginning with his Grammy-nominated debut, Water, been a member of the original Broadway cast of It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues, and performed for the launch of NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Mission.
