Although he was never the most publicised pianist in the history of jazz, Andrew Hill was nonetheless an essential and highly original player. On a good dozen albums or so recorded between 1963 and 1970 for Blue Note, he fell often into the formal avant-garde category, not hesitating to upset the prevailing codes and never resting on the laurels of easy, reassuring swing or daddy-style hard bop. Surrounding himself with other troublemakers such as saxophonist Eric Dolphy and double bassist Richard Davis, Hill never ceased to deliver colourful music of great freedom. S’il n’a jamais été le pianiste le plus médiatisé de l’histoire du jazz, Andrew Hill n’en demeure pas moins un acteur essentiel mais surtout original. Sur une bonne douzaine d’albums enregistrés entre 1963 et 1970 pour Blue Note, il fut souvent à l’avant-garde formelle, n’hésitant pas à chambouler les codes régnants et ne se reposant jamais sur les lauriers d’un swing facile et rassurant ou d’un hard bop à papa. S’entourant d’autres empêcheurs de tourner en rond comme le saxophoniste Eric Dolphy ou le contrebassiste Richard Davis, Hill n’a cessé de livrer une musique colorée et d’une grande liberté.
