For his fourth solo piano album, Martin Tingvall has refined his melodies even further. On record after record, the Hamburg-based Swede has further refined his blend of jazz, nineteenth-century music and Swedish folklore. But it is the purity that predominates here on When Light Returns, his new score which has taken a turn towards pure musical narration. As always with Tingvall, think travel. It's an intense trip but always coloured by a certain lightness. This journey offers him a way to free himself from the influence of his elders John Taylor, Keith Jarrett and Esbjörn Svensson. On this record, the biggest change has been on the piano: it sounds more generous, more direct, and is played with a virtuoso hand. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz
