Ever since Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu donned his superhero attire he has inevitably climbed to stardom. Last time, with his album African Giant, Burna Boy, narrowly missed out on pocketing the Grammy award for Best World Music Album 2020 as the winner Angélique Kidjo dedicated it to him. With Twice as Tall, its producer Puff Daddy assured him: “You are going to make album of the year.” And the Nigerian star has really pulled it out the bag. The record is brimming with today’s flavours, a cocktail of R&B, afro fusion, grime and dancehall and features which transform the casting into a Hollywood premier. From the intro track, Level (Twice as Tall), the godfather of modern African music, the Senegalese Youssou N’Dour, joins the fray. Later on, we find Kenyan afro-pop artists Sauti Sol on Time Flies, the prince of Grime Stormzy on Real Life, youth heroes Naughty By Nature honour a track which carries their name and even Chris Martin of Coldplay lends his vocals on Monsters You Made. The very ambitious Burna Boy reigns above the featuring artists, defending tooth and nail the fact that Black lives matter.
