It's wonderful to be able to write a review about Czech composer Josef Suk and not have to mention that his wife died of a heart attack in her twenties. So much of Suk's greatest and most profound music was inspired by his tragedy but, to paraphrase his teacher Dvoràk, how many times can you listen to minor-keyed monumentalities? The works on this disc are by the young Suk, Suk the ardent romantic, Suk the violin virtuoso, Suk the presumptive heir to Smetana and Dvoràk, and, above all, Suk in love. The energy, exuberance, and excitement of Suk in love with playing music, in love with writing music, and -- above all -- passionately and profoundly in love with his wife.
All of that energy, exuberance, and excitement is expressed in these exemplary performances by the Nash Ensemble. These performances of the Piano Quartet, Op. 1, and the Piano Quintet, Op. 8, are strong, vital, soulful, and fervent with terrific ensemble and sensitive phrasing. Even better, however, is the performance of Suk's glorious Pieces (4) for violin and piano, Op. 17, by violinist Marianne Thorsen. The power of their playing is commanding her imagination and the warmth of her interpretation is compelling. The recording of the Pieces (4) by the violinist Josef Suk is still the first recording to get because, after all, the violinist Josef Suk is the grandson of the composer Josef Suk, but this recording of the Pieces (4) by Thorsen is just as warm-hearted and expressive. Hyperion's sound is clear, round, and deep.
